What are AI agents? Autonomous AI agents, explained

An AI agent is software powered by a large language model that takes a goal, decides the steps on its own and carries them out by using tools — calling a customer, updating a CRM, booking a meeting — instead of only answering questions. An autonomous AI agent does this end to end without a human approving each step, within the limits you set.

How do AI agents work?

Every AI agent combines four parts: a model that reasons about the goal, instructions that define its job and limits, tools it can call (APIs, calendars, CRMs, phone lines, messaging apps) and memory/knowledge such as your documents and past conversations.

The agent loops: read the situation, choose the next action, call a tool, check the result, repeat until the goal is met or it hands off to a human.

What types of AI agent platforms exist?

There is no single “best” AI agent platform — they solve different problems. Most fall into five groups:

  • Developer frameworks (e.g. LangGraph, CrewAI, AutoGen): maximum control, you write and host the code.
  • Workflow automation with agents (e.g. n8n, Zapier, Make): agents inside automation flows between apps.
  • Enterprise suites (e.g. Microsoft Copilot Studio, Salesforce Agentforce, Google Gemini Enterprise): agents inside a vendor’s ecosystem.
  • Voice AI infrastructure (e.g. Vapi, Retell AI, Bland AI): APIs to build phone and voice agents.
  • Business-ready autonomous agent platforms (e.g. Jelliu): agents that talk to customers by voice, WhatsApp, email and chat and act in your tools, launched without code.

What can autonomous AI agents do for a business?

  • Sales: call and message leads, qualify them and book meetings.
  • Customer support: answer calls, WhatsApp and chat 24/7 and escalate with context.
  • Appointment booking and reminders.
  • Collections and payment follow-up.
  • Outbound campaigns, surveys and post-sale follow-up.

Where does Jelliu fit?

Jelliu is a no-code platform for 100% autonomous AI agents that work across voice calls, WhatsApp, email and web chat, in English, Spanish (LatAm), Portuguese (Brazil), French and German. It is WhatsApp-first: you link your Jelliu account to WhatsApp and run the product from the chat — by voice notes, text or images — while your agents handle customers on every channel.

Plans are published: Starter $79, Growth $249 and Business $549 per month, Enterprise on request, with a Free plan with 15 voice minutes each month (see pricing). Developers can also drive Jelliu through its MCP server.

Examples of AI agents in business

  • A voice agent that answers every call to a clinic, books the appointment and sends a WhatsApp reminder.
  • A WhatsApp sales agent that replies to ad leads in seconds, asks qualifying questions and books a demo.
  • An outbound agent that calls a list of overdue accounts and agrees a payment date.
  • A support agent on web chat and email that resolves common questions and hands off complex cases to a person with full context.

How to choose an AI agent platform

  • Who will build it: engineers (framework / voice API) or business teams (no-code platform)?
  • Channels: does it need phone calls, WhatsApp, email and chat — or just one?
  • Languages and markets you serve.
  • Actions: which tools must the agent use (CRM, calendar, payments)?
  • Pricing model: per minute, per seat, subscription or enterprise contract.
  • Controls: human handoff, audit logs, data retention.
